Chemistry Lab 2

Electrochemistry Copper Plating

Material

You will need 250 ml beaker, stir rod, alligator clips, D battery, battery holder, cupric sulfate, copper electrode, brass key, dish soap, and water.

Procedure:

Prepare the coin for copper-plating by cleaning it with toothpaste or soap and water. Dry it with a paper towel. Then stir cupric sulfate into 60 ml of hot water until no more will dissolve. Your solution should be dark blue. Let it cool (You made similar solutions for the recrystallization procedure). Using the battery, place the battery in the battery holder. Use one alligator clip to attach the copper electrode to the positive terminal of the battery (now the anode) and the other to attach the key to the negative terminal (now the cathode). Partially suspend the coin in the solution by wrapping the wire lead loosely around the stir rod and placing the pencil across the mouth of the beaker. The alligator clip should not touch the solution. Place the copper electrode into the solution, making sure it doesn’t touch the coin and the solution level is still below the alligator clip. An electrical circuit has now formed and current is flowing. Leave the circuit running for 20-30 minutes, or until you’re happy with the amount of copper on the coin.

Result:
The result that I got is the copper have plat the gold color coin after 2 minutes.

Observation:
The surface of the copper is removed
The coin color changes slowly

Conclusion
It was a really cool to learn about how to colt a thing with another thing. I have to know that gold ring, not all is a real gold. The plate it using electricity for plating thing.
